The freckled box turtle is also called the star-spotted box turtle. This box turtle, which is distributed in western Mexico and is covered with small yellow dots, can be said to be the least known one. There are few reports about it and there is also little research in academia.

Frecked box turtles are divided into two subspecies. Smith (1979) listed six criteria to distinguish the two subspecies. However, Buskirk and Ponce-Campos (2011) pointed out that not all of them can be used for substantial subspecies identification, so the subspecies issue may need to be re-examined. At present, the two subspecies can only be distinguished by their place of origin.

The egg diameter of the Freckled Box Turtle is about 2.9~3.3CM, with some parts only 1.7~1.8cm. Young tortoises will have freckles and black spots on their carapace. As they age, the carapace and freckles will become darker. Adult males have brown freckles, while females have yellow or tan freckles.

Specially mention that box turtles are omnivorous and will eat insect larvae, crustaceans, shellfish, fish, amphibians, aquatic plants (such as water chestnuts) plants), fruits and algae, etc., and occasionally forage on land.
